Mt. Kiso Komagatake Trail (for beginners)

Required time:3 hours 30 min. to 5 hours round-trip
Difficulty level:

Mt. Kiso Komagatake stands at an elevation of 2,956 meters, the tallest peak in the Central Alps. While there is a steep Hacchozaka hill at the beginning of the trail from the hotel, if you stay at the hotel you can leave before the first ropeway arrival, providing a quite and relaxed hike. Once you climb the steep hill and make it to the ridgeline the view opens up and all that is left is a gently sloping trail to the peak. This trail is not overly physically demanding, so most people can easily complete it in half a day. If you do decide to climb Mt. Kiso Komagatake, be sure to bring the proper clothing and gear.

Dress in Layers

a20760359c1c2673ca01c4780a5cd1e71Mountain climbing requires that you dress in layers. You will not need extremely heavy clothing.

However, avoid wearing cotton clothing when on a hike. Cotton fabric will absorb moisture when you sweat and it is very difficult to dry. If your body is continually wet you will lose body temperature, which will not only steal your strength, but also could cause hypothermia depending on the conditions. Therefore, be sure to wear polyester or wool clothing that is both warm and easily dries after getting wet. Ideally, polyester should be warn in the summer when it is warm and wool in the autumn when it is cold.

Take only what you need and make sure your belonging are compact. It is important to adjust your temperature by removing layers if you get hot and adding layers if you get cold.

What to Bring

*This is the recommended minimum necessary gear for a summer hike.

  • Rain gear (rain coat)
Bring a top and bottom made of Gore-Tex or other breathable water proof material. This can also be used in place of a jacket, making it an essential piece of mountain climbing gear.
  • Hat
A hat will protect you from UV rays and heat stroke. Bring a cap that will also keep the rain out of your face in case it does rain.
  • Footwear
Wear specialized mountain climbing boots that cover your ankles. The size and fit differs by manufacturer, so select footwear that perfectly fits your feet after breaking it in. The key points are sturdiness and slip protection.
  • Backpack
Bring a daypack ideal for a day hike (20 to 30 liters). Don’t forget to bring a cover for your daypack in case of rain.
  • Gloves
Gloves will protect your hands from the cold as well as cuts and scrapes.
  • First aid kit
Bring a first aid kit to be prepared and for peace of mind.
  • Plastic bag
A plastic bag is very versatile. It can be used for wet articles or to store garbage.
  • Food
The key point is to replenish your vitamin C. When you sweat you lose vitamin C as well as sodium, so bring food items that have lots of vitamin C.
  • Water bottle
A water bottle is a must-have item to keep hydrated. A plastic PET bottle can also be used in the summer time.
  • Map, guidebook and compass
A compass is an essential item so you can fully read the map. Be sure to bring these items together.
  • Top, jacket and pants
  • Towel
  • Tissue
  • Other miscellaneous gear

Mountain Climbing Manners and Rules

The Central Alps call home to myriad varieties of wildflowers that bloom from right after the snow melts to autumn. These flowers have survived this harsh natural alpine environment since the ice age. Hikers must know that once destroyed or disrupted, it will take a long time for nature at this altitude to recover.
Some varieties are now endangered or are dwindling because of people picking them or stepping on them.
We ask that everyone who visits the Central Alps help in protecting its natural environment so that these wildflowers can be enjoyed by future generations. With this in mind, please abide by the following rules during your visit.

  • Stay on the trail and don’t go past the green ropes into flower fields or grasslands.
  • Don’t pick alpine flora.
  • Bring your garbage with you.
  • Only smoke where allowed and carry a portable ash tray.
  • Don’t bring your pet mountain climbing.
  • Please go to the bathroom in the designated locations only.

Mountain Climbing Plan

Be sure to file a mountain climbing plan because it contains important information about the people in your party heading out on the trail. You can find the mountain climbing plan form at the entrance to the ropeway.
